We Did It!

Well everyone, we made our competition! We successfully wrote at least one post for every day in December! Knew we could do it! We survived Down Servers, Jumping Bobcats, Deaths, and also enjoyed new Mac Mods.

Anyway, it isn’t over yet. We want to see how long we can continue writing a post a day, just to make it more interesting and continue the challenge. If you have any requests for posts, (tutorials, tech help, really anything) we would be glad to hear them in the comments.

HOWTO: Part 2: Accessing Files Wirelessly

Yesterday i made a post on how to access files from a mac on a windows machine. Today i will go over how to access files that are on your mac that you would like to access from your windows machine on your network.

If you want to access your files on a mac from your windows machine, you first have to set up your mac to allow this. Go to System Preferences(/Application/) and then go to Sharing.

There enable file sharing

You will then get an ip address which you can go to from your windows machine to access your shared files. You can add more folders to the list if you want, and they will be shared too. On the windows machine it will ask for your password in order to access the files.

This is going to be a mini-series on how to access files from your pc on a mac, and from your mac on a pc.
Lot’s of us use a mac, but still have a windows computer at home. They still have files on their windows computer that they would like to access. But how? Read more to find out.

This is one method of accessing a folder on your windows computer. There are other methods, one which i will write about later.
Both computers have to be on the same network for this to work.
The first thing you do is find out what IP address your windows computer is on. On your windows computer, go to start, and then click on Run.

Then in the new box type CMD.

A black type of windows will open.

Here type ipconfig.

Then note your connection, it might be ethernet, or wireless, and then write down the ip address.
Then on your mac computer, go to finder, and go to: Go and then Connect to Server.

Then type: smb://the ip address here and hit connect. It will then ask you for the username and password of the windows machine, enter them, and click ok. Then you are connected to the windows machine. However you’ll probably only see one or less folders. This is because you haven’t chosen which folders windows is allowed to share on the network. On the windows machine go to a folder you want to see on your mac, and right click it.

Then go to properties

Then to Sharing

Then go to Advanced Sharing

Then if you want other people that you share the file or folder with to make changes, go to Permissions and click full control. If you only want it for one person, you have to hit the add button, and tell it to only allow this person to make changes to it.

Then you’re done. You should now see that folder on your mac, and you probably have to enter the computers user name and password to access the files in the folder.

Ripping CDs

Don’t you hate having to carry around your cds to watch a movie on them? Well, if you have hard drive space to waste, and some free time, this may just be the solution!

If you wan’t to rip your movies off a cd or dvd you bought, you can use two tool’s. Both of these are free. One is called HandBrake, and the other is called MacTheRipper. Handbrake recently also got the ffmpeg plugin, allowing it to convert movies to for example psp format.
With HandBrake, just insert a dvd, then open HandBrake, and select the dvd as a source. Then it is probably a good idea to tell it where to save, the default is your desktop. Then click start, and it’ll start and tell you an approximate time till completion.
For MacTheRipper just insert your dvd and open MacTheRipper. Also give this a save location and click Go!
That’s it, it’s quite simple to rip a movie of a dvd. Now you can watch it but you don’t have to carry the disc around with you. This is also handy as a backup for the movie, if you are scared of losing the disc, or it getting scratched.

The fact that so much of the world is able to commit and agree on a lie to the degree that we have is both inspiring and terrifying. So many people practice the lie and it is upheld by loads of people. It seems a harmless lie, as a matter of fact I support it, but the sheer numbers of enforcers leads me to worry. Humanity can band together to weave total ridiculous junk for the younger generations.

Once I realized that amazing achievement, I understood that it was theoretically possible that the “Fat dude of zero latitude” could have just been a warm up. What if they then went on to fulfill a much more ridiculous story, filling our heads with garbage to keep us distracted? As I went into my math class, pondering these things, It was all suddenly crystal clear. My teacher was spewing ridiculous junk, adding to the most elaborate lie so far. Logarithms.

They don’t exist.

BootCamp

Lot’s of people still don’t want to buy a mac because they don’t have a lot of games made for them. However, this has been solved some time ago.

You can now install windows on your mac computer. The utility that does this is called BootCamp. Bootcamp allows you to make a seperate partition on your hard drive on which you can install windows, xp or vista. You can then put in your windows cd and start installing it. Using this method you can run windows at native speeds. This allows you to play all your games just on your mac. The only downside to this is that in order to boot into windows, you have to restart in it. For me this is a downside, because on OS X I normally have a lot of things open, safari with two windows and 15 tabs, transmission, mail, etc.
However, there is another way to run windows on your mac without having to reboot into it. If you installed it using bootcamp, you are in even more
luck because you can just use that, and you don’t have to install windows. The application is called VMWare Fusion. You can pay for the application, or you can use one of these serials (password: poultry). Don’t forget to block the connection with Little Snitch. NOTE: block the connection to the vmware fusion site. Then go to your little snitch rules, and make a new rule, and make it allow connections. Then for program, go select, and go to: /Library/Application Support/VMWare Fusion/ and select vmnet-natd. This is so the OS you are running in VMWare can connect to the internet. Then you can choose to use your bootcamp partition and just load windows from there. This works very well, but you can’t play games on it, because the performance would be slow. You can change the settings for it, if you click the settings button, and let it use more ram, two or more cores of your cpu, etc.

EDIT: Something else which is very handy is rEFFIT(password: poultry), a boot menu changer. It will ask you whenever you start up your mac if you want to boot into OS X or Windows. And if you don’t touch the computer it will automatically boot into OS X in 20 seconds.

It was all set up, the bear-trap ready,
even a hidden motion detector made to look ginger-bready.
The children hid, greedy and happy,
suddenly one little kid made this story all sappy…

Isn’t Christmas all about sharing and love?
We shouldn’t attack Santa I say! We shouldn’t hurt him or sell his hat on ebay!

What on earth are you talking about, freak?!
Yeah seriously you’re talking crazy man.
Where are you getting these ideas?! I say we throw him out into the snow!
Haha we should take all his money, THEN throw him out!

Come on guys this ain’t funny, all’s i got is a twenty!

Little Jr. became very successful and content,
With ‘sharing and love’ going everywhere he went.

But whats the real moral here that I’m trying to make?
He knows if you’ve been bad or good,

White Christmas

Whew.
The shopping’s done (I popped a lung carrying a ton trying to outrun all the other ones), the stockings are hung, sitting back and watching reruns.

Plus I’ve rhymed. That about sums up all that is needed for christmas. Wanna hear something interesting? I went to Scotland this year. Yep. Good Old Aberdeen. I’ll post pics and whatnot in some other post, but I bring it up now because I was expecting a nice snowy christmas. Apparently the world doesn’t revolve around me or something, because while Im sitting here in my hawaii shirt and shorts, the people back home (my home) in Rainy Seattle are getting another weird, very white, christmas. Since I cant post pictures of my white Christmas, why not look at these from Auburn and Seabeck….
