Review: Super Smash Bros Brawl ~Spoiler Alert~

Brawl

One of the most entertaining and simple game series Nintendo has to offer is back and better than ever! Super Smash Bros Brawl for Wii easily surpasses both the original and Melee, due to its better graphics and interesting story mode.

Well here’s a game that all sorts of Nintendo people have grown to love. You’re a Starfox fanboy? I’m a Pokémon lover? Your favorite is Link and Zelda? Well gee, let’s just put them all together. People love having the “my hero could beat up your hero” conversations, and Nintendo put many of their famous heroes and villains together into one game back for the Nintendo 64. The next console brought a much more interesting variety of things to do, adding in a homerun derby and other special melees. And I’ve finally got my hands on the third installment, Brawl.

Damn, that is tweet.

  • The characters. There are now 35 different characters (But Zelda/Sheik, Samus/Zero-Suit, and Pokémon Trainer each have more than one option to switch between.) Twenty one of the characters are veterans returning from previous games, but that have been considerably improved upon (for example Samus). That leaves 14 new characters in this game.
  • Nostalgia. Part of the beauty of these games is that they take different old and new Nintendo characters and bring them all together. For the young and old Nintendo fanboy this will make you remember. For example, one of the new characters in Brawl is a robot named R.O.B. from the old SNES. Or Mario from the classic NES game.
  • Story. Super Smash Bros never was a very deep and elaborate game, and never will be. One of it’s favorite traits is how simple it is to just battle it out without any traditional story. However, in Brawl they added an adventure mode that is far more elaborate than the older stories (used to just be a progression of battles, ending in a fight with Master Hand). Subspace Emissary is still a relatively simple story when compared to how other games work, but it creates a fun way to change it up and to introduce the new characters.
  • Graphics are considerably improved on all the characters. When I booted up my old N64 game I was amazed at the difference. These characters have undergone such improvements and the attention to detail makes it a very smooth game.

What the Cluck?

  • Controls. Whenever I have friends over there are at least two of them who need me to plug in my old gamecube controllers into the Wii (Although it must be pointed out that being able to do this is a handy plus). The Wiimote and Nunchuck have proved to be confusing controllers for this game to the players of the earlier versions. I’ve found that while unusual at first I now am able to use them with considerable ease, but the switch was a big jump.

I actually can’t think of any more things that really bug me. Some added features like new or updated items and Final Smashes can get annoying, but if you’re looking to get rid of that there’s a setting when you set up a Brawl. This game has got it all. I have actually beat the entire story mode and collected all the characters. I’m just enjoying the simple games, trying out the internet gaming (Tell me your brawl friend codes and I’ll add you!), and trying to collect all the trophies.

SPOILERS!

For those wondering, you can get all but three characters by simply playing the Subspace Emissary. The three hidden characters after that can be achieved in several different ways:

Spoiler:

Jigglypuff

Jigglypuff

Yep, Jigglypuff is back. The singing Pokémon everyone loves (or hates, I myself wish it was Roy instead…ah well..) has returned. To obtain Jigglypuff, either play 350 brawls, or find the hidden door that appears in The Swamp (after beating the giant Diddy Kong). You can also complete twenty events after beating Subspace Emissary. Then you must defeat her in a brawl.

Toon Link

Toon Link

From the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, comes the next character. Toon Link is fast and the replacement for Young Link enthusiasts. To find Toon Link you must clear classic mode on Hard as Link, play 400 brawls, or go to the secret door in The Forest after having defeated Subspace Emissary.

Wolf O’Donnell

Wolf

Wolf is the enemy of Fox and Falco. He handles heavier and slower than the two, but stronger and more powerful. To unlock Wolf, you must either play 450 brawls, defeat boss battles with fox or falco (after beating the Subspace Emissary), or go to the secret door in The Ruins level that appears after beating Subspace Emissary. Once you acheive one of these, you will get the “Challenger Approaching!” screen and then must defeat him in a brawl.

All the other characters, including Snake and Sonic, will join you in Subspace Emissary. Happy Brawlin’!
